Bru-Van Kieu ethnic families enjoy better lives in new houses

After over a year of living in temporary tents following a flood in 2020, 34 Bru-Van Kieu ethnic families in the central province of Quang Binh's Quang Ninh District are now enjoying better lives in their new homes.

The 34 households with 152 people of Sat Village used to live at the foot of a mountain. During a heavy flood in November 2020, they were evacuated to a safe area to avoid landslides in the village.

The local authorities then decided to set up a new resettlement area for them. After over a year of construction, the families have just moved into their new houses.

The resettlement area covers three hectares with 34 traditional Van Kieu stilt houses and some other facilities. Each 26-square-metre house cost VND 90 million.

Besides the new houses, a new school and a floating house have also been built for the villagers here thanks to support from authorities in Hanoi.

A villager, Ho Vuong, said that they were very happy to have a new house built in the traditional style of the Bru-Van Kieu people. "We now don't have to fear when the flood season comes," Vuong said. "The new house is much stronger than our old house and we're feeling very comfortable living in it."

Another villager, Ho Thi Xien, said that she wanted to send her sincere thanks to the local authorities for their efforts. "We’re very grateful to be given new houses in a safer place," Xien said. "Our children have a new school that is close to home. And we also have a floating house to shelter during floods."

Head of the village, Nguyen Van Muon, said that the new resettlement area had improved the lives of local people. "The villagers are all very happy as they now don't have to worry about the floods," the official said. "They also have solar electricity in their new homes."
