The Provincial People's Committee and Peace Trees Vietnam: Deploying the cooperation relationship to overcome the consequences of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW)

(Quang Binh Portal) - On the morning of January 8, 2020, the Provincial People"s Committee held a working session and signed a cooperation framework agreement with Peace Trees Vietnam (PTVN) on the implementation of the cooperation relationship to overcome the consequences of landmines and ERW. Attending the meeting were Mr. Tran Tien Dung, the Vice-Chairman of Provincial People"s Committee; Ms. Claire Yunker, Executive Director of PTVN and representatives of Department of Foreign Affairs, Provincial Military Command and Provincial People"s Committee Office.

After discussing and exchanging ideas, the two sides agreed to sign a cooperation framework agreement to continue building and implementing the cooperation relationship to overcome the consequences of landmines and ERW in Quang Binh to minimize the risk of landmines and ERW accidents for people in Quang Binh through supporting the clearance, collection and handling of landmines and ERW in the province; supporting socio-economic development activities in remote and difficult areas; supporting communities and people in Quang Binh province affected by the effects of landmines and ERW to contribute to improving their living standard through specific programs and projects.

The specific cooperation contents: PTVN will deploy programs, projects, and activities to support for Quang Binh province on implementing the project of searching and handling bombs and landmines in Quang Binh province to make the land safe for living, cultivating and implementing socio-economic development programs. Accordingly, PTVN will implement the landmines and ERW clearance and destruction in lands highly contaminated by bombs, mines and threatening the lives of people. In addition, PTVN will carry out the landmines and ERW clearance in lands serving for the community development and local socio-economic development (such as infrastructure development, sustainable livelihood and economic development) based on local needs and proposals; perform education activities of bomb and mine risks in the daily activities of mine clearance workers, help raise people's awareness of the dangers of landmines and ERW, minimize accidents caused by landmines and ERW; coordinate with relevant units and localities of Quang Binh province in carrying out the landmines awareness education and propaganda to the community; continue to implement the project of building a kindergarten and supporting nutritious meals for children attending that kindergartens, prioritizing disadvantaged areas in the province; award scholarships to bomb and mine victims and their children in Quang Binh province who are attending in schools, universities, colleges and vocational training schools; award scholarships to excellent pupils and students having extremely difficult circumstances in the province; organize delegations and donors to visit the project activities, learn about culture, take part in exchanges with people in the province to enhance cooperation relationship and continue to mobilize donors...


The duration of the project is 05 years, from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2024

Speaking at the working session, the Vice-Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee expressed his sincere thanks to the PTVN for its great support to the province in the task of bomb and mine clearance. He also emphasized that Quang Binh was the province having the largest contaminated area of bombs and mines; over the past years, the province has enlisted all resources, deducted budget ... to support this task; however, due to the little funding, the bomb and mine clearance in the province has still faced many difficulties ... The Vice-Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee highly agreed with the minutes of the meeting on cooperation and hoped PTVN care more for bomb and mine clearance in the province in the coming time to achieve more results. On the side of the province, he promised to continue directing the concerned units and localities to coordinate and create conditions for PTVN to implement the project effectively.
