230-kilo wartime bomb found in Quang Binh
Experts from Mines Advisory Group (MAG), a UK-based non-governmental organisation that assists people affected by landmines, unexploded ordnance, and small arms and light weapons, co-operated with the Vietnamese military in the central province of Quang Binh on Friday to safely defuse a wartime bomb which was found at a local construction site.
The 230-kilo MK82-bomb is found by an excavator driver on April 4 near the Nhat Le River in a crowded residential area of Dong Hoi City.
The 230-kilo MK82-bomb, which was left over from the American War, was found by an excavator driver on April 4 near the Nhat Le River in a crowded residential area of Dong Hoi City.
MAG experts said that the bomb still had the detonator intact and a blast radius of one kilometre.
It was safely moved to a site where it was destroyed.
More than 40,000 people have been killed and 60,000 others injured due to unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Vietnam since the war ended in 1975.
It is estimated the country still had about 800,000 tonnes of UXO by 2023, and 17.70 percent (5.60 million hectares) of the country was still contaminated with UXO.
