Vung Chua - the resting place of General Vo Nguyen Giap

(Quang Binh Portal) - Vung Chua is known as the final resting place of General Vo Nguyen Giap. This place has attracted the attention of millions of people and become a spiritual tourism site of local and foreign tourists on their trip through Vietnam.

Located at the foot of the Hoanh Son mountains, about 6km from Ngang Pass to the southeast and 3km from National Road No.1A, belongs to Tho Son village, Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province, Vung Chua has a terrain in the shape of a coiled dragon and crouching tiger. From Tho Son peak overlook toward the sea, the space is extremely spacious and peaceful.

Being surrounded by three islands, including Hon La, Hon Gio and Hon Nom (known as Yen Island), the sea of Vung Chua is pretty airtight which serves as a shelter for many boats during storms.

At sunset or sunrise, the landscape of the area looks like a dreamlike painting. Standing on the peak of Tho Son Mountain, tourists will be charmed by the beautiful landscape of the immense sea with gentle waves, a clear and blue sky and long white sand beaches with lush trees at the foot of the mountains.

According to the older people in the region, the name of Vung Chua is derived from the word “Vung” – calm sea area and “Chua” – a sacred pagoda on the mountain which now only the foundation remains due to devastation from time and wars.

Besides, Vung Chua is one of the beautiful landscapes in Hon La deepwater bay. According to the book entitled “Dai Nam du dia chi uoc bien” by culturist Cao Xuan Duc (in the Nguyen Dynasty), it was called La Son Bay. The sea is famous for specialties, including swallow’s nest, blood cockle, lobster and abalone which were offerings to the royal courts.

Not far from Vung Chua, about 1km, is a small island, called Yen which covers a total area of 10ha and is surrounded by the sea. It is the home of the largest number of swallows in Quang Binh province. Standing on the island to look toward the mainland, tourists will see stretching white sand beaches and rocks in different shapes.

Thanks to its beautiful and peaceful landscape, Vung Chua is selected to be the final resting place of General Vo Nguyen Giap.

With great potential for tourism development, Vung Chua will become an acttractive spiritual tourism destination for both domestic and foreign tourists, not only the beautiful scenery but also very scared.
