An exemplary man

Vo Nguyen Giap was very smart and had an extraordinary memory. He never stopped studying. Not only academically but he also learned from real life and from the practice of the revolution, national construction and fighting and from people whom he met. For him, a simple gesture or statement could be turned into an effective strategy to deal with the enemy. He was also called "a dialectician from birth". In fact, intelligence, studying and working were combined with experience to make him keen and decisive in historic moments.

Most of his works were about the military. He successfully accomplished his mission in the two national resistances against the French colonialists and the American imperialists attaining achievements beyond war. He made endless efforts in considering policies to build and protect the country. In different posts, either as Minister of Interior in the Revolutionary Provisional Government, or as Deputy Prime Minister in charge of scientific affairs or in studying Ho Chi Minh Thought, he made significant contributions. In particular the contributions in relation to Ho Chi Minh Thought were strategic and crucial to the construction and protection of the national sovereignty.

After years of sharing the "taste of gall and bed of thorns as well as bombs with Vietnamese people, he became associated with them as flesh and blood. Soldiers and officers used to address General and Commander-in-chief Vo Nguyen Giap as Anh Van (brother Van). He is considered the big brother of the Vietnamese army. Everybody loves him.

Oppressed nations around the world saw him as an exemplary fighter. The youth of the world found in him an example of strong will and determination. Many foreign scholars highly appreciated him. "He has been praised as the biggest and only military genius of the 20th century, one of the biggest military geniuses of all time". (Victory at any cost by Cecil B. Currey, Brassey’s.INC Publishing House, published in the US, 1997). The El Moudjahd Newspaper in Algeria wrote: General Giáp, more than a hero, belongs to the group of heroes whose stories would be told from generation to generation. Perhaps, even historians need fact data to avoid depicting the General as a legendary figure and to fully describe his achievements". (Article from El Moudjahd Newspaper, published in Alger, January 4, 1976 on the General’s visit to Algeria).
